Central hit by contaminated water
Most parts of Central province do not have clean water.
This is because recent flooding of creeks and wells are likely to be contaminated.
In response to that, the Central province disaster committee has arranged for aqua tablets to be distributed for sterilising water to avoid people contracting waterborne diseases.
Acting provincial health adviser Abraham Apisai yesterday said though the office had not received formal reports, the disaster office is trying to prevent people from contracting waterborne diseases.
“We have heard some complaints.
“However they are yet to be verified,” said Mr Apisai.
He said the aqua tablets were procured from the Department of Health.
He confirmed that the tablets will be distributed to targeted areas in the province.
There are up to 5000 tablets with each bristle containing 10 tablets will be delivered by the end of this week.
The aqua tablets come in doses.
The supplies have are to be sterlised in 20 litres of water per tablet, explained Mr Apisai.
A demonstration on how the aqua tablet is used in sterlising water was done at the provincial headquarters at Konedobu to the disaster teams that will be out into the affected areas to distribute the tablets.
Meanwhile, Mr Apisai is appealing to the disaster affected communities to boll water before drinking.
He further appealed to the villagers to support each other.
He added that those who have safe water tanks should assist fellow villagers for drinking water.
Mr Apisai also said they will be also distributing treated mosquitoes nets.
This is especially to villages situated in the low land areas and coastlines.
