Church, agriculture sector partner

The Northern and Milne Bay Adventist local mission has joined hands with agriculture to make revenue for the mission.
President Pr Leonard Sumatau said the reason why they went into agriculture is because the mission was economically depressed.
As a result he said they have partnered with the spice industry to see that farmers who are also Adventists church members in Milne Bay and Oro province generate revenue by planting vanilla and fresh produce.
Pr Sumatau said after seeing that the mission was economically depressed the mission together with church members who are heads of Government bodies helped them to come up with a Northern and Milne Bay Mission of the Seventh Day Adventist Sustainability model.
He said this is because despite being economically depressed both provinces have the potential to be economically viable due to the availability of resources.
“We then come up with a foundation called the ADCARE foundation which will be overseeing all farming and establishing of markets to see enable us to have more revenue in the mission as it is now a development arm of the local mission.
The farming model will contribute four per cent to the foundation while spinoffs will be delivered to various areas and that includes government who will receive its share through tax,” he said.
Pr Sumatau said the mission of the foundation is to empower people to become economically viable meaning through the foundation people or church members will be empowered to become agent of change.
Project manager Iso Wilson said now that the foundation is established with a five men board member, they are looking forward to see the harvest of fresh produce in June as well as the establishment of a vanilla farm.
Mr Wilson said the vanilla project will see 800 vanilla yards being planted, 400 in Oro and 400 in Milne Bay and if successful there is a very good chance of revenue for the local mission when it’s into full production by 2023.
“Fresh produce we will start as soon as possible as the project itself looks very good however the challenge now is on church members on the ground and we are very happy to partner with the Spice Industry who will help us with marketing,” he said.
