FRUIT growers in Eastern Highlands Province have formed an association to work towards bringing back the quality of the citrus fruits (oranges and lemon) back to their former glory days.

This was revealed this week in Goroka by Vincent Gaglma, a fruit grower, who said all the farmers in the province have come together and have agreed to form a group to promote their interests.

He said the association would represent the farmers in areas of improving their farming methods and also to look for markets to sell their lemons and oranges, amongst others.

Mr Gaglma said farmers are capable of planting citrus fruits to meet the demands of the country, while also improving the nutritious value of the fruits.

He said fruit farming had been known in the Highlands since 1990s for its quality when people started budding root stock, which is the base that the citrus fruit is budded.

“We want to control the root stock and make sure the right budded seedlings are given to the farmers so that the quality will be restored,” the fruit grower said.

“The quality and quantity of citrus fruits have faded due to quality loss, and it is up to us to bring it back.”
