Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and his delegation officially launched the Highlands Highway rehabilitation program in Goroka last Friday.
The Highlands Highway will be rehabilitated and maintained in three phases, starting from Lae all the way to Mt Hagen.
The funding of K3 billion for the Highlands Highway rehab program has come from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) with the work contract already given to three Chinese construction companies.
The government delegation, numbering more than 10 MPs and department heads, addressed a huge crowd at Goroka’s National Park before Mr O’Neill did the official ground breaking ceremony.
He told the people of his government’s goals and visions for transform PNG before the country’s 50th jubilee.
He thanked ADB and other development partners for their continuous support to fund major infrastructures in the country.
“These donor agencies are not our friends, but they have recognised stability in the government and in our government policies, and that is why they are helping us,” he said.
He said potholes on the Highlands Highway will be a thing of the past in the next four years when the highway is fully rehabilitated.
Works Minister Michael Nali told the people living along the highway not to claim compensation when work begins.
Mr Nali told the three Chinese contractors to engage local labour and contractors to assist with the road works.
Also present during the launching was ADB country manager and the Chinese ambassador to PNG.
