Sir Mekere blamed for delay in APEC report
BY FRANKLIN KOLMA
A DETAILED report on the recently passed APEC meet has been delayed due to a single politician’s meddling claims the Minister for APEC.
Speaking during Parliamentary Question Time yesterday, an evidently frustrated Minister for APEC Justin Tkatchenko said that a detailed report on APEC 2018 could not be presented to Parliament due to the Member for Moresby Northwest Sir Mekere Morauta’s relentless efforts at getting APEC related information.
Mr Tkatchenko said that while Sir Mekere’s intentions may have been well placed, his efforts were not.
“A detailed report including the final cost of APEC is being delayed because the Moresby North-west mp wrote to the Ombudsmen Commission complaining about vehicles and other things that were supposedly purchased for APEC,” said Mr Tkatchenko.
He said that it was unbecoming of a Member of Parliament to seek information of an official nature prematurely, knowing well and fully that an official government document on the subject had yet to be tabled in Parliament.
Raising a point of order upon hearing the minister’s remarks, Madang MP Bryan Kramer said that inquires by Members of Parliament or any other entity should not deter MPs from providing official reports to Parliament, especially ones as important and controversial as the APEC report.
Mr Kramer’s point was determined by the Deputy Speaker to be out of order.
Mr Tkatchenko continued by stating that it was “ridiculous” for Members to be suggesting sums of K5 billion that were used for the APEC and added that it was just a matter of time before all these speculations would be put to rest.
Revisiting some known APEC costs, however;
APEC Haus cost K120 million,
The Jacksons Airport expansion came at a
cost of K100 million,
The Jacksons Airport’s International terminal refurbishment came at a cost of K140 million,
Hilton at K1.4 billion and Star Mountain Plaza at K1.5 billion.
Also included in the total costs going toward APEC are the Paga Hill Ring Road which costed K50 million and the APEC Authority itself which was reported in November to have cost the government a staggering K80 million.
The controversial 40 Maseratis and three Bentleys in themselves cost the government a good K33.6 million with an extra K159 million spent on 817 other vehicles that are now being readied for tender.
Taking into account the official comments made by the PM and now amplified by Minister for APEC Mr Tkatchenko, a contradiction can be drawn as established costs for named and delivered APEC projects clearly outweigh costs alleged to be below K300 million.
While the public can only accept the official stand of the APEC Minister and the PM, the pending report is indeed a document that is most anticipated.
