Tkatchenko prepared to issue new land title

The title for land bought by the PNG Defence Force for more than K15 million at 8-Mile is missing.
In a letter by the Defence Secretary Trevor Meauri, the PNG Defence Force had asked the Lands and Physical Planning Department about this land, that adjoins the Air Transport Squadron, which it acquired in 2014.
It appears now that the Lands and Physical Planning Minister Justin Tkatchenko is prepared to issue a new title to replace the “missing” one.
The land was acquired from a known company through a National Executive Council decision in anticipation of an expansion of the PNG Defence Force in light of the 2018 APEC Leaders’ Summit and relocation of the long-range reconnaissance unit which was located at Goldie Barracks, further north of the city.
The Eight-Mile land was compulsorily acquired through the Department of Defence by a notice of acquisition under section 12 of the Land Act on September 5, 2014, and a payment of K15.4 million was made to the company.
However, to date no sale and transfer of that land, deed of release and notice or reservation under section 49 of the Land Act had been done.
He said yesterday that the no title had been found in the title documents in the department. He said the only documents found about this land file at the department were copies of payment and a couple of other pieces of paper.
“The file didn’t have the title or real documentation. I received a letter from the Defence secretary Trevor Meauri and I have given instructions to the registrar of titles to immediately get the title over to the PNG Defence Force for them to utilise for the purpose of the PNGDF.
“As it is it is State land the land will always be owned by the State. “The money used to buy land is all in order. It belongs to the State.”
He said that if the PNGDF took over the land it would own a vast tract of State land to develop. “In the coming weeks we will get the title raised and present it to Major General Gilbert Toropo.”
