PERSONAL hygiene, water safety and hand washing with soap are critical intervention to prevent polio transmission, says UNICEF’s Pravin More.

He said these are the critical areas and day to day behaviours that need to be practiced by everyone one including children.

Mr More said people should know about the “f ” diagram which basically talks about how polio can be transmitted to reaching the new host by faeces (pekpek), fields, fluids, fingers and flies.

“Given the situation that polio can be transmitted from faecal oral route meaning if child has polio virus in the body and then excretes its stool (pekpek) and through the contamination of the stool, it will
contaminate either the water, food or the finger and enter the mouth of another child as a new host.

“If faeces of an affected person with polio are not appropriately disposed in open fields, there is a chance of these viruses entering a new host by fluids through contaminated water like sewerage, drain water, swamps,” he said.

Realising that these water sanitation hygiene services were not adequately distributed to the population, he said the government had come up with a national policy on WASH with set targets.
