THE Ramu-Madang Highway should be open for use again by Wednesday, the latest as Department of Works continued to work to fix it.

Secretary for Works David Wereh said last week during Prime Minister’s tour of Okapa, Madang, Wewak and Vanimo the two major culvert crossings at Tapo and Yakina along the Ramu Highway completely cut off.

“But we responded to those two major emergencies,” Mr Wereh said.

Unusual heavy rains caused flesh floods on the Ramu Madang highway.

“Two major culvert crossings at Tapo and Yakina along the Ramu highway is being completely cut off at this stage,” he said.

“And since Friday, the Department of Works responded to those two major emergencies, and contractors have mobilised the plant and equipment and culverts to the site and repair works have started, and very well to restore the road at those locations quickly as possible.”

He said the road is expected to open for use by Wednesday, the latest.

“Our efforts to create a temporary bypass at the location for quick public access are constrained by difficult local geographical and terrain conditions,” Mr Wereh said.

“Such situations on our highways are expected to continue due to the combined impacts of unusual weather patterns and the aging road transport infrastructure.”
