Group seeking funds for nine deaf students

THE Morobe Deaf Association (MDA) is seeking financial help for nine of its students attending remote schools in the province.
The association’s sign-interpreter and adviser Gabriel Daniel said the nine hearing impaired students are attending various high and secondary schools in the province doing grade nine, 10 and 11.
Mr Daniel said many of these students come from broken homes, have unemployed parents or are not supported by their parents and relatives to continue their education because of their disabilities.
“Through the association, I have known these students who are keen learners and have strong ambitions to become a successful persons in future like able students.
“Lack of financial assistance to pay their school fees is affecting their studies.
“And I am spearheading this fundraising appeal called ‘Operasen Halivim Deaf Sumatin’ through the media for help,” Mr Daniel said.
He said he is the only one helping the deaf students and it is too much as two of the students are doing Grade 11 at Dregerhafen Secondary School, one doing grade nine at Pindiu High School.
Another two are doing Grade Nine at Siassi High School, one doing Grade Nine at Lae Community College and two doing Grade 10 at Menyamya Secondary School.
Mr Daniel said these students contacted him for financial assistance but he cannot cater for all of them so he is appealing for help to support them to continue their education.
“I am also encouraging these students to be self-reliant and not to depend on free handouts.
“Since the academic year has already started and they are in school, I will appreciate any help in cash or kind to further raise money to help these students,” Mr Daniel said.
