A total of 225 pigs were presented to government ministers and other dignitaries who accompanied Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to New Ireland last week, a statement says.

“All wards came in with pigs, with a record of 225 pigs presented which included contributions from business houses, public servants and individuals. Three cows were also presented for the occasion,” a statement released today by the New Ireland government said.

It fulfilled Governor Sir Julius Chan’s statement last week that the Chiefs would take the honor and bring the pigs which were then to be gifted to the officials in a truly New Ireland way.

Sir Julius was indeed also grateful that the Prime Minister was able to travel to New Ireland and stayed overnight in Namatanai lodging at the official government residence- which also accommodated eight ministers and governors.

The statement also said the Prime Minister travelled the Boluminski Highway back to Kavieng before flying out of the province on the Falcon jet.

But while in New Ireland Prime Minister Peter O’Neill during the grand opening of the Boluminski Highway and the ground breaking of the Bopire township and Sporting Stadium last Thursday (April 11),  announced the national government’s commitment of K6 million to be paid to the landowners of the Kavieng Airport.

This payment is for the extension and upgrading of the Kavieng airport to be an International Airport.

“I have brought K6 million for the Kavieng airport landowners, for the airport extension, for big planes to land at the Airport.” the statement quoted the Prime Minister.

The cheque of K6 million was officially handed over to the New Ireland Government by Finance Secretary Ken Nangan the next day (Friday April 12) at Malom, in Central New Ireland.

The payment is said to have been considered following Governor Sir Julius’ push for an increase from the originally agreed K4.9 million but the payment was delayed for some time.

The K6 million payment now allows for the extension of the runway by 1.4 km so that bigger jet planes like the Boeng767 can land bringing in tourists.

O’Neill who landed on Bo-Pire in a  helicopter was accompanied by Enga Governor Peter Ipatas, Works Minister Michael Nali and Civil aviation Minister Alfred Manaseh.

They were given a rousing reception which included a guard of honour and welcome by school children.

O’Neill said the Boluminski Highway was a very important Highway, for the Province and country.

“A famous highway, a lot of people know this name. Building a road like this is not an easy task.”

This being his second time to travel along the Boluminsky Highway, he stressed that infrastructure development in the country is important.

“Because it will bring services into the country, the vision of Boluminski for economic development is still the same today. When our government came into power in 2012, we put extra effort to make sure we finished the highway.” The statement released by the New Ireland Government quoted Peter O’Neill.

He is reported to have said projects in the provinces are happening because of stability and strong leadership.
