CCTV helps police make 20 arrests

TWENTY arrests have been made at the Lae market in two days after installation of two closed circuit television (CCTV) at the Lae market police station last week.
Ten arrests were made during the trial of the CCTV on Monday and Tuesday.
Market police station commander senior constable Gordon Matafimo said the CCTV is very effective in identifying law breakers.
Mr Matafimo said they monitor the CCTV and once they see any suspicious act they alert their colleagues on the ground to make arrest.
“Most arrests are streets sales, traffic offences and stealing.
“The CCTV makes our job easier and we are very thankful to the Chinese community for their assistance,” he said.
Lae metropolitan superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jr said setting up CCTV in hotspot areas of Lae is planned for but funding remains an issue.
Mr Wagambie commended the Chinese community for having the confidence in police and assisting them with one of the significant strategies that will reduce petty crimes at one of the busiest areas and bus stops.
“This will cut down on police workload to do foot beat patrol in identifying the crime perpetrators and also the presence of the cameras become a threat to them not to commit crimes as they are being watched,” Mr Wagambie Jr said.
He said the CCTV will be maintained by the Chinese community as they feel a sense of pride for helping make Lae safer for the general public.
CCTV technician James Lin said they are members of Chinese chamber of commerce and the donation is a token of appreciation to Lae police for their tireless effort to curb law and order issues in the city using various strategies.
Mr Lin said it took them only seven days to set up and footages recorded can be saved for review for more than 40 to 50 days.
“We will arrange for two more cameras,” he said.
