Elavo likely omission from PNG team
Basketball
The name Elavo has been synonymous in the sport of basketball. Over the years, the name has
withstood time for generations with their siblings carrying the name at the national and regional
tournaments.
However, that legacy is being threatened with the likelihood of one of the top players being dropped
from the squad who are preparing for the Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa in July. Three of the Elavo
siblings have been dropped or are likely to be dropped from the final side for the 5×5 version of the
game.
Sharp shooting guard Gabriel Frank Elavo who rose to the national scene as a young performer in
2013 has his name scrapped from the 2015 Pacific Games squad due to a knee injury.
Elavo was replaced by Cornelius Muri that year.
Also this year, the young Elavo’s hopes of making it back into the team after recovering from the knee
injury saw him dropped again for the Pacific Game in Samoa in July this year – news that still has not
settle down well with him.
Elavo went through trying times and his dream of retaining the PNG jumper fell short after leaving Moni
Plus Tamaraws to join up with PMBL champions, the Kutubu Security Services Southern
Flames.
Asked about his performance with the Flames, Elavo said he wasn’t given enough court time by the
Flames’ head coach Moi Muri to at least prove his worth.
It could have had an impact on Elavo’s rise to the international scene – something he will be working on
for a possible return to the representative level.
