Leaders: Attack will not affect Chimbu recount

THE attack in Goroka yesterday will not disrupt the court ordered Chimbu regional recount seat which is nearing completion.
This was stated during a meeting at the Goroka police station with parties involved in the recount together with Eastern Highlands Governor Peter Numu, PPC Eastern Highlands and other stakeholders.
Present in the meeting were Peter Numu, Michael Dua and his petitioner Noah Kool, NOSS Winchlee Oibotee, EHP election manager John Kaupa and Chimbu recount Election Manager James Piapia, to resolve the issue.
Goroka businessman and director of Night Owl Security Services (NOSS) Winchlee Oibotee said the fight resulted after a licensed pistol was taken from one of his static guards at his security post in the night, allegedly by Chimbu Governor Michael Dua’s supporters.
Mr Oibotee reported the incident to the police and demanded the firearm be returned.
Governor Numu told the police to arrest and charge those involved in stealing the pistol and inciting violence.
Mr Dua said it was an isolated happening without the knowledge of the leaders.
The leaders addressed the public at Goroka’s Peace Park after their meeting with Mr Dua and Mr Kool cautioning their supporters to refrain from violence.
The confiscated firearm was returned to the security firm after the meeting.
The two Chimbu leaders together with Kerenga Kua apologised to the people of Goroka and thanked the leaders of EHP.
The security firm thanked the police and leaders for solving the issue quickly and also for the return of his firearm.
