BY PORENI UMAU
MORE than 10,500 cruise ship tourists have visited Rabaul and Kokopo in East New Britain in the past two months.
This is according to reports from the PNG Ports Limited Rabaul office where six tourist cruise ships called into Rabaul since the beginning of the year.
The report said two cruise ships visited in February and four last month. The 2019 tourist cruise ship schedule showed that the Sea Princess of Princess Cruises opened the tourist rush to Rabaul in February, followed by Pacific Aria of P&O Australia.
March introduced the arrival of Arcadia of P&O Cruises, Columbus of Cruise & Maritime, Pacific Dawn of P&O Australia and just last week, a repeat visit by P&O Australia’s Pacific Aria. According to organisers, Queen Elizabeth II of Cunard is set to embrace the beautiful volcanic shores of Rabaul next Monday.
Most tourists come in from Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and the United States.
The tourists were in Rabaul and Kokopo for eight hours with an itinerary already prepared by the tour operators for the day.
Most tourists go for historical tours and visiting World War II sites.
The sites include the Japanese Barge Tunnel and the Japanese Hospital, the Kokopo War Museum and the Bitapaka War Cemetery.
Others go for volcano tours to the famous hot spring on the western end of the Tavurvur volcano.
Some climb the mighty Tavurvur while others go wreck diving or island trips to the Duke of York Islands.
The North Coast Road area also provides many lures for snorkeling at the Submarine Base and along the Talili Bay area and Kabaira beachfront.
