Patricia Oii, chairperson of the Pacific women in maritime association (PacWIMA) has, presented a paper about women in the maritime sector at the Asia Pacific heads of maritime agencies (APHoMSA) forum in Seoul, South Korea.

The high level forum was held from April 15-17.

In her presentation, Ms Oii informed forcum members of the Pacific’s progress towards gender equality and contribution to SDG 5 through regional and national networks.

Ms Oii, who is also a legal officer with PNG’s National Maritime Safety Authority, highlighted the day for women in maritime (D4WIM) to be celebrated in the Pacific region on May 18 and the launching of the regional strategy for Pacific women in maritime (2020 – 2024) during the 3rd energy and transport ministers meeting in September.

There was overwhelming support for Pacific women in maritime and PacWIMA acknowledged IMO, SPC, the member states, the maritime employers and our fellow women and men in the sector in providing the space and visibility for Pacific women in maritime.

PacWIMA also acknowledged the leadership of Paul Unas, the chief executive officer and general manager for NMSA in supporting women in the maritime sector.
