PNG Premier Men’s basketball league competition set to kick off last night at the Sir John Guise Stadium was called off.

Acting Chairman of PMBL Alain Boussoungou in an email to this paper said the competition can not start the competition as the clubs didn’t pay up their affiliation fees as agreed in the first club delegates meeting held at the Taurama Aquatic Center in Port Moresby.

Boussoungou, a former international basketball player himself said the league didn’t had sponsors and find it difficult to pay for the venue hire and was expecting the clubs to own up to their commitment to pay before the competition can start.

“We were supposed to kick off the preseason last night at the Sir John Guise Stadium however all the clubs didn’t pay in their registration fees so we had to call of the games,” Alain said.

The PMBL acting Chairman however thanked all the current and interested teams for turning up at the first club delegates’ meeting last Friday to ironed out few things with the league before its season was to kick off last night which didn’t happen.

“All the clubs agreed to pay up before the set date which was on the 4th April and no one made an effort to pay their fees,” Boussoungou said.

PMBL general secretary Kevin Teme said invoices were already sent to the clubs straight after the delegates meeting but until yesterday, no club had deposited their registration into the PMBL account.

“We are only getting feedback from Moni Plus and KSS Southern Flames that they will pay up and are in the process however the other clubs have not mentioned anything of that to us or we have yet to receive notification from them,” Teme said.

Meanwhile the clubs that have confirmed to participate in this year’s challenge is Saints, KSS Southern Flames, Moni Plus, MTSL Exodus and PNG Propest Chariots.

Teme also revealed that there’s a new bid for a new team, Birdwings that will be deliberated at the board before they can be given a final decision on their participation.

Birdwings owner Peter Kaise has given his full blessing for the team to participate and hope that PMBL would accept their bid.

“We’ve heard of them and have watched them having their trial games on various occasions but so long as they meet the PMBL criteria set then they are okay to join the league,” Boussoungou said.

“In the mean time, we have yet to receive their EOI and lists of players to be part of their team this season. Birdwings have a good chance but it’s up to the club to meet all the criteria set,” the acting Chairman said.
