Size does not matter, says leading gynaecologist
BY FRANKLIN KOLMA
THE insertion of foreign materials into the male genitalia to enlarge it is a dangerous procedure and should not be practised, says a respected medical practitioner.
Dr Glen Mola revealed this week that a growing number of men were experiencing serious, and in some cases, life-threatening medical conditions after undergoing unconventional enlargement practices.
He said that he had come across at least 30 Papua New Guinean men with penile disfigurements and that in almost all these cases, an injection had caused the defects.
Dr Mola said that there was an unfortunate misconception being peddled by nefarious individuals that injecting the male genitalia causes instant and substantial enlargements.
Dr Mola, an academic and gynaecologist, said the problem was the injection of various materials into the organ.
“Those who sell this promote the idea that the injections will increase the size of the penis,” he said, adding that these were pure myths and that in reality the procedures had terrible side effects, some of them permanent.
“Not only do these injections not increase the size of the penis, they disfigure it, (and) can cause life-threatening reactions against some of the materials used in these injections, and usually end up rendering the organ non-functional for sex.”
Dr Mola said that it was only natural for boys and men to have insecurities about their size and that this was a universal psychological phenomenon common to the gender.
A web search confirmed there is a psychiatric diagnosis for the more perverse instances of men thinking that their member appeared to be too small called penile dysmorphic disorder.
Respected urologist practising at Port Moresby General Hospital Dr Osborne Liko agreed that penile mutilation was a growing concern in the public health domain. He said that what was worse was the fact that those selling the diabolical service were being allowed to continue the heinous practice with no fear of prosecution or public condemnation.
Dr Mola said that it was the young to middle-aged men who were falling victim to this form of genital mutilation and that something had to be done to deter anyone thinking of enlargement. He said that the Internet and common stereotyping played a large role in misleading men into wanting larger organs to appear more masculine and desirable.
“In spite of what is said on the Internet, girls are not interested in the size of male genitals.
“They are more interested in a man who is caring, funny, healthy, a good person and nice to be with.
“And as for the sex thing, it is much more about technique and doing what your partner wants than what size it is,” said Dr Mola.
He and Dr Liko condemned the idea of penile enlargement and discouraged those thinking of trying it out to “perish the thought”.
