ABG and NAC reach a solution
BY GORETHY KENNETH
The government through the National Airport Corporation (NAC) and the Autonomous Bougainville Government have resolved to let the Buka Airport stay open and continue operating.
NAC boss Richard Yopo said yesterday that the corporation had reached an agreement with the (ABG) and that the closure of Buka airport, originally set down for December 22, would no longer take effect.
“NAC had given ABG five days notice to implement commitments and strategies necessary to resolve the law and order issues and continual security breaches that were occurring at Buka Airport or face closure of the airport,” Mr Yopo said.
He said that the Bougainville government had responded by committing to supporting a long-term police involvement plan at the airport and establish a committee of very senior people to proactively deal with the land owner issues.
This committee would also engage with all stakeholders to ensure there was no more interference with airport operations.
“The police are already on site at the airport and the stolen vehicles have been returned.
ABG has further agreed to continually support NAC at Buka Airport to ensure that the airport can operate on an uninterrupted basis,” Mr Yopo said.
He said that NAC had warned that if there were further disruptions in the future, then it would have no option but to close the airport immediately and without notice.
“NAC thanks ABG for their professional response in committing to resolve this serious issue in a timely manner to avoid disruptions to Buka airport passengers.”
