THE people of Wau in Bulolo District of Morobe Province are calling on the major commercial banks to set up automated teller machines in Wau so that people can have access to financial transactions.

Public servants and business houses including the people of Wau told Post-Courier that there are no automated teller machines or ATMs  in Wau town and therefore they have to travel every time to Bulolo just to make financial transactions, especially cash withdrawals.

Public servants from the Wau Rural Local Level Government said many of them serve in rural areas of Wau and sacrifice their time to travel into Wau town and then to Bulolo to access transaction services.

“It cost us a lot to travel, even half of our family budget goes to our travel expenses,” the public servants said.

They said if an ATM is set up in Wau town then that will enable customers of financial institutions to perform financial transactions, such as cash withdrawals, deposits, transfer funds, or obtaining account information, at any time and without the need for travelling to Bulolo to access transaction there.

“Using an ATM, the people can access their bank deposits or credits in order to make financial transactions such as cash withdrawals, check balances or credit mobile phones to avoid risks of travelling,” they said.

A longtime businesswoman and resident of Wau Donna Harvey Hall said business houses are always faced with challenges when it comes to fortnights to pay their employees.

Mrs Harvey-Hall said Wau used to have two banks but these banks closed due to some reasons and small banks in town were not profitable and were later closed down.

“We have no ATM in Wau and I have to travel to Bulolo to get money to pay my workers. It is terrible and very risky especially during such peak periods.

“I did ask one of the banks to install ATMs at Giant Holdings retail however the response from the bank was they will only put one at a nationally owned enterprise and yet none of them have proper security services.

“Therefore as a citizen of Wau, I am calling on the respective financial institutions to look into the needs and demands of the people of Wau and setup ATMs in town,” she said.

Some of the students said despite having no ATMs they normally prefer using electronic funds transfer (EFTOS) at point of sale.

However, this service comes with additional fees charged depending on your shopping list that will determine how much you can get as cash-back.

“We hope the establishment of ATMs in Wau town will be of great service to the whole of Wau,” the students said.
