Homebrew consumption a risk to community
WHILE some families enjoyed their Christmas holidays, others just whished it would end for they feel threatened and unsafe by the ongoing celebrations involving homebrew.
Michael Tom and his family left their home in Tanam, Markham district in Morobe Province just to get away from drunks that continuously disturbs the community.
“Homebrew is getting out of hand in Nadzab, Tanam, and Yalu. Young men and elders are always drunk and causing fights among themselves and making lots of noises that sometimes we don’t get good rest,” Mr Tom said.
He said police presence is needed in these areas before something bad happens and it will be late for the police to intervene.
Mr Tom said not only do the locals live in Tanam but a mixture of people from different provinces of Papua New Guinea.
“I am also an outsider just like others but we cannot step in and do anything as it is the landowners doing all these things so what am I to do, I just observe,” Mr Tom said.
He said young men have no respect for themselves and others around the community at the early stage of life and this is a damaging image for the people of Tanam.
He said he wished that Christmas will be over soon so at least people will not find a reason to celebrate.
Mr Tom said he thinks the police know about these things but are not doing their job because they do not have money for fuel to do such work.
“Not only do we need police presence but awareness needs to be carried out for young people in Tanam to be good people in their community and also help the community and the country in future,” he said.
He said he hopes the New Year will be different in Tanam but he is not expecting this change will not happen anytime soon if ignorance is still in everybody.
