Prayers for Indonesians after tsunami
The Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has extended the sympathies and condolences of the nation to the people of Indonesia following the overnight tsunami in the Sunda Strait.
“The loss of life and injuries that have been reported from the Sunda Strait region are truly terrible,” Mr O’Neill said.
“Many people have lost their lives and it is feared that number will continue to rise.
“The thoughts and prayers of Papua New Guineans are with the people of Indonesia at this unfortunate time.
“In PNG, we know first-hand the devastation that can be brought by a tsunami and we have lost many lives in the past.
“This is made worse when a disaster occurs in the night.
“Following the recent earthquakes in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, and after the tsunami in Aitape in 1998, Indonesia was very supportive of our country’s relief efforts.
“If there is any support that our country can provide to assist, we stand ready to help our brothers and sisters in Indonesia.”
