A 13-year-old boy from Goilala is a state witness in a drug smuggling case.

While his father along with another man, who attempted to smuggle 10 bags of marijuana weighing in at 17.3kg into the Nation’s Capital last Friday afternoon were caught by police.

The bags would have had a street value of almost K100, 000.

The boy, who witnessed the exchange of words between his father and his accomplice near Vanapa, Central Province, gave his statement to the police to that effect, and now is a state witness where he will be asked to give evidence against his father.

Along with the boy, the driver of the truck who was also brought in for questioning, will be a state witness as well to the case.

According to the statement the boy gave to the police, the driver of the vehicle which buys and collects scrap metal needed to relieve himself, so he stopped at a location near Vanapa and went into the bushes.

In the minutes he was away, his crew a man who was in the company of his two children spoke with another man who appeared near the car, before the driver returned, 10 bags packaged and wrapped tightly was bundled into the truck and hidden under the scrap and crushed cans.

The driver came back and saw the second man, but he did not question him and they left Vanapa returning to Port Moresby.

Without their knowledge the NCD Dog Unit had received a tip off and allowed the vehicle to come into the city, then they stopped the vehicle at 8 Mile near the ATS roundabout to surprise the driver.

The driver was initially confused as the police had checked the truck.

Police officers said that the father, who happened to be the crew of the vehicle among the confusion, got out of the vehicle and walked off with his four year old daughter who was also in the vehicle.

He left his son and the driver of the vehicle to answer the questions on the drugs.

The man who was trying to smuggle in the drugs using the company vehicle has been identified.He has been identified as John Amai, 43 years old married with two children and is from Kiame village in Tapini, Goilala district.

He is currently in custody at the Boroko Cells and is set to appear this morning at the Waigani courts facing a charge of being in possession of compressed drugs. The police are now looking for the father.
