Board: Focus on nurseries
BY MATTHEW VARI
The PNG Rubber Board will focus on nursery development in 2019 as it aims to revive plantations around the country in rubber producing provinces.
Board Chairwoman Josephine Kenny gave the update during an agriculture sector end of year conference, held last month.
“We had funding from the budget in 2018 for K3 million but we were only given K1 million and that K1 million has been sent to start up nurseries.
“We are restarting the Cape Rodney nurseries which work is underway for that and also in Manus.
“Much of the funding is going back to the nurseries.
She said all rubber producing provinces will receive some funding from the K2 million from 2018 she said would hopefully be given to the board.
“I hope we will get early next year that has been cut and we only got K1 million so unless the nurseries are developed we will have new productions and we can also look at setting up a factory,” Ms Kenny said.
