Bumbu bridge gets upgrade

Concreting works are underway for the Kamkumung section of the Bumbu bridge by contractor JV PNG Investments.
The bridge has been left neglected for many years, resulting in hectic traffic and petty crimes flourishing in the area.
Lae MP John Rosso is focused on having the place fixed and has ensured that stage one — from Chinatown pass — has been completed.
Mr Rosso said the bridge situation had contributed to traffic congestion for many years, disrupting Lae residents and business houses based at Kamkumung, Taraka, Malahang, Omili and Butibam.
“This is a national road but I cannot sit around and wait for the national government to fix this problem,” he said.
Mr Rosso said since no consideration was being given to the problem at the national government level, the provincial government was taking responsibility.
He said for the next three weeks, the road will be closed and vehicles would have to use the fixed Chinatown, Bumbu Bridge access area.
“The positives that come from fixing the road will be immense so I ask residents for your patience,” Mr Rosso said.
“You have already seen the progress and advantages gained by the fixing of the bridge approach on the Butibam side of the Bumbu bridge.
“This is being done for a better Lae.”
