Central Bougainville police farewell commander
Police personnel from the Central Regional Command of the Bougainville Police Service (BPS) have farewelled their commander, Chief Sergeant Herman Birengka, who has been re-assigned to head the BPS training branch in Buka.
Chief Sgt Birengka is a career officer and has collectively served the Royal PNG Constabulary and the BPS for over 36 years in various capacities including stints at the Bomana Police College and later as a trainer for the community auxiliary police (CAP) program when it was introduced to Bougainville during the restoration period.
Mr Birengka had been stationed at the Arawa police station since 2003 and was one of the first Bougainvillean police officers to restore normalcy on the island during the restoration period after the crisis.
He commended all police personnel who had worked under him over the years saying despite the challenges of maintaining the rule of law after the crisis, he was satisfied with the achievements of the Central Command.
“Our job requires time, effort and commitment and I am proud that you all have contributed in one way or the other to ensure we continue to maintain the rule of law and ensure the peace process is not disturbed,” he said.
Mr Birengka also thanked the ex-combatants, business houses, churches, community organisations and government authorities for working with the police to maintain peace in Central Bougainville.
Arawa police station commander Sergeant Lyne Bomai will be acting central regional commander until a permanent appointment is made.
