The death toll from the Cyclone Penny generated storms that hit parts of PNG has risen to seven.

A young man was reported drowned at Kwikila in Central Province last Saturday when he was washed away while attempting to cross an overflowing river.

The other deaths recorded were – a grandmother crushed by her falling house at Miaru village, in Gulf, another grandmother crushed when a tree fell on her house in Bulolo, two children drowned in Central, another drowning in Port Moresby and the electrocution of a child also in the capital.

The search for three Manus men missing in the Bismarck Sea is winding down. The men were travelling in the banana boat from Madang to Manus when a storm separated them from their lead boat. They have not been seen since, despite a sea and aerial search.

Meanwhile, many parts of the southern region remain underwater from the past week’s stormy deluge with homes damaged and food gardens and roads inundated by floodwaters.

Central Province seems to have borne the brunt of the flooding in Kairuku Hiri district and Rigo and Abau districts.

The Central Province administration began a disaster assessment yesterday in the Kairiku Hiri district.The damage bill is expected to be in the thousands while loss of food gardens will require humanitarian food aid for the people.
