Family claims murdered teenager was ‘not criminal’

The family of a teenager who was killed in the Moresby Northwest suburb of Gerehu on New Year’s eve has disputed earlier reports which suggested that he was killed for his part in a carjacking.
Furthermore, witness reports have also claimed that the four men involved in the murder of Gary Okona, 18, at Gerehu Stage 6 (all suspects believed to be from Wabag in Enga Province) were also involved in the murder of two other men the same night.
In an interview with the Post-Courier last Friday, the victim’s aunt (name withheld), from Buana in the Morobe Province, said Okana was on his way back home from the store when he was killed, three houses away from her house.
She said what earlier reports had suggested was a car theft was a misunderstanding between a group of boys (who Okana was with) and the drunken revelers inside the premises, outside which the car in question was parked.
According to the aunt, the car had rolled down the slope from where it was parked and the victim and a few other boys were pushing it back to clear their own driveway, when they were set upon by their assailants.
In the confusion that ensued, Okana and his friends were chased down the street and he was stabbed twice in the back with iron rods, from which he eventually died.
Police have yet to finalise their findings on the case however; two suspects were in police custody in relation to the killing while another two were at large.
The family of Gary Okona is appealing to anyone with any information regarding case or the whereabouts any suspects to come forward to police.
