FOOD gardens, properties and homes were damaged by heavy rains, wind and flooding over the weekend in Gomore village, Rigo, Central Province.
Heavy rains over the weekend flooded through to the main village damaging homes, food gardens and properties worth thousands of kina.
Locals say their food gardens such as yams and banana gardens were washed away living them without hopes.
Flood that swept through to the main village may cause water borne diseases and other forms of illness.
The community is appealing to the district and provincial disaster office to move carry out an assessment on the damages caused by the bad weather.
However, neighbouring village Tagana, reported one death in 14-year- old boy who was washed away by the floods and drowned. The body of the little boy was buried over the weekend.
Ward member for Gomore village, Kokoro Godua, said some local farmers also lost their piggery and poultry farms.
“My village people will now be looking for food from the garden, and will rely heavily on goods from the shops. They have lost all they have in their gardens, such as bananas, yam, greens, and other main food crops which have all been washed away by the floods over the weekend,” Mr Godua said..
“Some of them lost their homes and household properties, a local trade store owner almost lost his trade store goods. This is a very serious disaster my village people have so far faced,” said the village member.
“I now appeal to our local Rigo MP Lekwa Gure and Central Governor Robert Agarobe, to please advise their respective officers from the disaster and health authorities to visit the affected areas, carry out their assessment reports, and conduct medical checks on children and adults who may face airborne deceases.”
