BAUBAKE constituency MP and ABG minister for community government Jacob Toke wants his area to be freed of weapons.

He was speaking during the Baubake referendum ready declaration ceremony in Buin last Monday.

Mr Toke said he was concerned after hearing reports of business operators in Buin being in procession of illegal firearms as a means to protect their business from armed criminal gangs.

While highlighting the importance of the referendum, he said the step taken by ex-combatants to dispose of their weapons not only indicated their commitment to the Bougainville peace agreement but also to make the constituency a safer place for locals.

“I want those shop owners, who have a firearm, to know that Buin is not a place for people like you,” Mr Toke said.

“You better move out and go somewhere to operate your business.”

He attributed the achievements in preparation for the referendum to the commitment of ex-combatants, chiefs and the local people.

He said recent developments indicated the locals regard for the peace agreement.
