FOLLOWING revelations of a culture of bias and favouritism inside PNG’s largest prison, acting Bomana jail commander Chief Superintendent Yelly Oiufa has admitted that he is aware of a number of cases of bias by warders inside his facility.

The apparent lapse in security in PNG’s number one prison has now raised serious questions about the effectiveness of not only the PNG Correctional Service (CS), but also the entire PNG Judiciary as one of the three pillars of our democracy.

Chief Supt Oiufa said yesterday that although he had not encountered any cases of bias in his two months as the acting commander, he was aware of previous cases of bias which had been dealt with by the prison administration.

“There are some isolated cases and we are trying to have them processed through our disciplinary process.

“But we have about 250 staff here at the prison and there are about 700 prisoners in our custody.

“So it can be very difficult to keep track of everyone at times,” he said.He said that in light of the recent allegations, his administration was taking the threat of favouritism among warders in the facility very seriously.

Chief Supt Oiufa said that stringent measures were in place to deal with any warders who breached prison regulations and encouraged anyone with any information regarding such acts of favouritism to come forward.
