Know your responsibilities
THE law defines duties and responsibilities, says Justice Joseph Yagi during launch the legal year in Goroka, Eastern Highlands province, yesterday.
A march led by resident judge Justice Joseph Yagi and Justice William Neill started from the police station to the National Court House with a guard of honour by the Police and the Correctional Services.
Justice Yagi said the discipline forces and the courts play a vital role in implementing the law. “The general primary function of the court is to adjudicate and determine disputes according to law.
In the criminal process, the court determines if a person is innocent or guilty. If a guilty verdict is reached, they are held accountable in terms of punishment,” he said.
Justice Yagi said under the Constitution, police are required to to keep the peace, prevent crime and protect lives and properties, while the Correctional Services should respect and protect human dignity while upholding the human rights of inmates, that is “persons on remand or serving sentences imposed by the court held in the institution that they serve.”
The staff of the National Judiciary Secretariat Services (NJSS), lawyers and the Law Society Council’s Gertrude Elai and several invited guests, including the general public, also took part in the legal year march.
