Momis: We must focus on peace
The primary focus on Bougainville should be to bring peace and creating a just and democratic government for the people of Bougainville.
ABG president John Momis as he welcomed the chairman of the Bougainville Referendum Commission to Bougainville last Saturday.
Mr Momis said that both the ABG and the National Government have the opportunity achieve this through the implementation of the Bougainville Peace Agreement.
“We must be focused on establishing permanent peace for Bougainville and its people,” Mr Momis said.
“Though we are frustrated by the national government’s lack of commitment to the Bougainville Peace Agreement we must be convinced that more can be done through collaboratively engaging our development partners,” Momis said.
He said that the BRC presence was to support Bougainville as it moved towards the referendum for self-determination.
He said Bougainvilleans are trailblazers with the resilience to prevail and he urged the government to provide a united front as the ABG prepares to meet with the national government for the joint supervisory body on Friday.
High on the JSB agenda would be setting the actual date for the referendum, outstanding grants owed to the ABG and questions on independence and higher autonomy.
Discussions on weapons disposal, internal revenue arrangements and post referendum transitions will also be discussed during the JSB.
Many Bougainvilleans are frustrated with the how the national government has failed to implement the Bougainville Peace Agreement.
Leaders on Bougainville have often said: “If O’Neill wants us to remain with PNG he should implement the BPA and show that he cares about the people.
“The further the national government tightens its stranglehold on Bougainville the further the Prime Minister is pushing the people away,” they said.
The idea of secession on Bougainville is as old as PNG itself and many are convinced PNG is going about resolving the issues on Bougainville the wrong way.
