Morobe Province set to implement education reforms
BY JOAN BAILEY
A TEAM from the Education Department was in Lae this week to conduct awareness on the 1-6-6 education system.
“Reforming of the national education system including the introduction of the 1-6-6 structure is to improve, preserve and maintain quality and standard education in the country,” James Agigo, acting assistant secretary for research, evaluation and statistics with the department, said.
The team taught the provincial education division, church agency schools, education stakeholders and parents the importance of the new structure and how it could the pave way for students to reach grade 12. Mr Agigo said the department wants active participation from stakeholders to support the implementation of the 1-6-6 reform and consultation with key stakeholders is vital.
“With the implementation, students will have one entry point, which is preparatory and one exit point of grade 1,” he said.
“The government policy indicates 13 years of accessing basic education — but the current practice is only nine years or less, due to grade eight and grade 10 examinations,”
Mr Agigo said it will grow the school, resulting in more spaces being created, as well as giving children more opportunities to continue their education.
He said the 1-6-6 system should be implemented by 2030.
Morobe education chairman, Andrew Gena, assured DoE of Morobe political support to implement the system.
Mr Gena said the new structure was timely as it goes in line with the provincial education reforms.
Morobe provincial acting education adviser Keith Jiram said the government is seeking qualitative education, with the implementation of two major reforms at the same time.
Mr Jiram said the education sector is challenged to implement standard-based curriculum and 1-6-6 education structure so they will do their best to see how it works in the province.
“The new structure is a bucket full of challenges and we will not see this as a reason to delay the implementation; we will learn from it and mobilise resources to address the challenges,” he said.
