Mother kills baby, buries body in bushes

A YOUNG woman and her mother will be facing further investgation in Western Province over their role in the alleged killing of a two-month-old baby boy.
The mother of the boy has been arrested and is in police custody for allegedly killing her son after being allegedly pressured by her own mother.
According to provincial police commander Brian Kombe, the 23-year-old mother left her home last Friday and took her son who was two months old with her. “She went to Daru Airport and near the tarmac, the mother went into the nearby bushes and killed the child, the child was stabbed once in the head and died instantly.”
“She wrapped the child in a red cloth, and using the same knife she dug a hole and buried the child.”
She returned home like nothing happened, he added.
“However her family became suspicious and kept asking her where the child was, by Friday evening she admitted what she had done.”
“The family reported the matter to police who launched a search for the child, the mother could not remember where she left the child, and because of limited resources we could not locate the grave.”
“The next day word had reached Daru town about what had happened, and the town assisted in searching for the body of the boy, we found the grave site between 9am and 10am on Saturday.”
Mr Kombe said that when the mother was interviewed, she admitted what she had done but said that her own mother was constantly nagging her and telling her that she would not be allowed to marry the child’s father.
“In anger she committed the crime, however we have also referred the mother to the Family Sexual Violence Unit to be interviewed, because she could have played a part in pushing her daughter to do what she did.”
“If she is found to have played a part, she will be charged,” Mr Kombe said.
The body of the boy is at the Daru General Hospital morgue while investigations continue.
