NCDABA provides avenue for future stars

One of the leading and active junior basketball development pathways continues to shine every Saturday at Hohola basketball courts in Port Moresby.
The National Capital District Amateur Basketball Association provides the foundation for grooming future basketball stars.
Association president Kevin Teme said junior competitions have been running since last year with few trials back in 2017 and 2016.
“NCDABA is the current national champions in the under 18 division for both boys and girls. Where most of our junior boys have graduated from the junior up to now some play at the premier/elite level which is PMBL,” said Teme.
These players include the likes of Anderson Hewe, Cornelius Muri, Esau Horo, James Karulaka, Mekere Serei and Moses Kairi to name a few.
The association’s aim is targeting junior competition as it is important for future development of players who possess the skills and game experience while at a young age.
“In the next five years, I want to see young boys and girls play in the Under 12 and U15 (divisions) to dominate the youth tournament. I believe they can eventually move up to the PMBL level and country and later on in their youth life,” said the president.
The junior players currently competing come from most suburbs in the nation’s capital that include Gerehu, Morata, Waigani, NCC Valley, Tokarara, Hohola, Nine-Mile, Boroko, Eight-Mile, ATS, Six-Mile, Kaugere, Sabama, Badili, Koki, Vadavada, Taurama and East Boroko.
Teme stressed it is the basketball federation’s responsibilities to ensure all member associations have junior programs running.
“For us, at NCDABA, we see and feel that junior development is very important and it is one of our top priorities,” said Teme.
To be part of NCDABA, clubs must field junior teams including Under 12, U15, U18 for both boys and girls. Last year’s hosting of the Under 15 Oceania Championship in Port Moresby did not turn out well for the host teams for both boys and girls given a lack of support in junior development competitions to actively keep players up to the
standard.
Few national players have taken time out to lend a hand in match officiating and even coaching which include Gabriel Elavo (coach/player-Tamaraws) Moses Lune (referee, coach/player-Southern Flames), Betty Angula (referee and bench official) Cindy Elavo (player/coach) Jordan Sere (coach/player) Rosa Kairi (coach/player) including other notable ones.
