Wafi Golpu SML landowners meet with Abel
PRESIDENTS of the three Wafi Golpu SML landowners met in Lae today with Deputy Prime Minister Charles Abel, Mining Minister Johnson Tuke, and Morobe Governor Ginson Saonu. Also present were Members for Lae Open, Hon. John Rosso, and Finschafen Open, Hon. Rainbow Paita, together with senior government officials, representatives of the Wafi Golpu Joint Venture, and landowners.
Ahead of the landowner groups tabling their position papers, DPM Abel said,
“We must ensure that we learn from past experience and get improved benefits from project agreements for our country and the landowners.”
“It is a great pleasure for me to receive the position papers outlining the aspirations of the three SML landowner groups.”
“I also welcome the news that the Landowner Identification Report for the pipeline corridor has just been approved by the Provincial Administrator. We must ensure all impacted landowners are brought to the table.”
“We are making good progress through the State Negotiation Team on the fiscal terms, Landowner and Provincial Government engagement and benefits, National Content Plan and Environmental Impact assessment and awareness.”
The fourth meeting of the Wafi Golpu Oversight Committee was held immediately after the landowners presentations. The Committee, established by the Prime Minister in January, is co-chaired by the DPM and Mining Minister, with representatives from the SNT and developers to advance the project against a timeline.
Prior to today’s meetings members of the DPM’s delegation made an aerial inspection of the Wafi Golpu site and surrounds.
