Consultants a waste of public funds, says Masiu
A SENIOR MP says engaging consultants to undertake districts’ activities is a waste of public funds.
South Bougainville MP Timothy Masiu said funds allocated for development purposes must be spent on their intended purposes.
Mr Maisu said this while presenting his 2018-2022 District Development Plan to the Department of Implementation and Rural Development (DIRD) in Port Moresby yesterday.
He said districts and provinces throughout the country are engaging expensive consultants to do their jobs such as developing five-year development plans, scoping of projects, feasibility studies and other activities at the expense of tax payers.
“We have public servants employed at the national level to do their jobs at no cost.
“This is because they are paid for what they are supposed to deliver to people’s expectations, instead districts are engaging consultants which cost districts and provinces half of their budget,” he said.
Mr Maisu, who is the deputy opposition leader, said whatever resources available at the district they can utilise for basic government service delivery.
He thanked the officers from DIRD for their tireless effort in assisting his district for the development of the plan that will guide the district in rolling out projects and programs.
“The plan – 2018-2022 – contains a development framework reflecting the identified needs and aspirations of the people of South Bougainville electorate.
“It determines the direction and magnitude of development and should guide all our resource allocations to priority impact projects and programs,” he said.
Meanwhile, Central Bougainville has presented its 2018 District Services Improvement Program acquittal reports.
Elizabeth Wapunai from the division of provincial and district finance management of the Department of Finance had commended Central Bougainville for furnishing their 2018 DSIP acquittal reports to DIRD.
