GETTING women into Parliament and getting women to be interested in taking up leadership roles in Parliament are two issues that must be addressed says the head of the Catholic Bishops Conference.

During a press conference last week on corruption and failed Church-State partnership, CBC president PNG and the Solomon Islands Bishop Rochus Tatamai said that the current term of parliament was highly unfair to the female population of PNG due to the total lack of representation of women in Parliament.

Asked to comment on the lack of female politicians in this Parliament, Bishop Tatamai said that laws were currently being passed based on male dominant agendas and that this was a direct result of the disparity in female leadership.

“How can we hope to fairly legislate when half of the populace is not represented in Parliament?” he said.

The bishop said that it was good to hear that Prime Minister Peter O’Neill was now talking about the possibility of having four women’s’ seats as per the four regions but added that he remained skeptical as this was not the first time that politicians had spoken on such matters.

He said that it was important to encourage women’s involvement in the legislative creation and amendment process and that this could only happen with interest being shown from the female community while avid support was shown by the male community.

“This will require male and female collaborative efforts where women must express an interest in leading while men show genuine support in the right for women to lead in society, especially in the political realm,” said Bishop Tatamai.

The bishop urged the Government to see the imbalance in gender representation in Parliament for what it was and work with urgency at ensuring seats were preserved for women in Parliament.

“Like in the nuclear family, women have the innate foresight to see what men cannot and the same is true for men.

“Thus, we need both men and women to be able to truly define and address societal issues,” Bishop Tatamai said.
