PNG can learn from India: Maru

NATIONAL PLANNING Minister Richard Maru has told the public servants attending the India Technical and Cooperation (ITEC) Day this week that PNG is not making use of the relationship it had with India.
Mr Maru said there was a lot of potential that PNG can learn and benefit from India, one of which was to learn how India was successfully creating 10million jobs a year for the youths, something PNG could learn from.
“Last year I went to India and one thing that fascinated me was that India could create 10 million jobs a year, they have the resources, it is time they come and invest in PNG,” he said. Mr Maru said that he was leading a team to India on March 22 to study how India traded so much employment and also in the field of information technology.
“India is world number one in IT, I am travelling with a team on March 22 to India. I am hoping the incoming hHigh Commissioner will drive this with me.”
Mr Maru said one of his aims also was to have a India-PNG economic partnership agreement similar to that of the EU and PNG. He also asked that the Indian Government equally assist PNG in these objectives.
India’s High Commissioner Vijay Kumar said that under ITEC, India could assist PNG as already every year, India allocates over 30 slots to PNG under “ITEC” and “Colombo Plan” for unique training courses in numerous civil and defence programs in different centres of excellence in India.
“In 2018-19, only five out of 36 slots have been used. In 2017, 13 of 24; in 2016, 10 of 23; and in 2015, 21 of 39 slots were availed of. Thus, only 40 per cent quota was utilised by PNG in the past four years,” Mr Kumar said.
“If the allocated slots are fully utilised on a regular basis, India can increase the number of slots, and further consider devising specific training programmes to accommodate PNG’s special requirements, if any,” he said.
“Therefore, we urge PNG to fully utilise the slots to take full advantage of the high quality of ITEC program.”
