Project transparency and accountability for Moresby North-west
MORESBY North-west electorate has adopted the practice of involving Department of Implementation and Rural Development in funding all projects to prevent theft of public funds and abuse of established public procurement processes.
Under the leadership and instruction of the MP Sir Mekere Morauta all projects funded under the district services improvement programme (DSIP) are to be carried out in fully accountable and transparent manner so that all funds approved for projects are actually spent for purposes specified.
In line with this, assigned officers from the DIRD will be invited to make physical on-the-spot inspection of projects before commencement, during implementation and upon completion to ensure full compliance.
The move follows numerous complaints over misuse of public funds, particularly during the period 2012-2017 when Sir Mekere was out of politics after he voluntarily retired in 2012. However, upon forced return to public life after elected in 2017 general election, his office has been bombarded with numerous complaints over incomplete projects, poor quality and sub-standard jobs on public infrastructure projects.
Sir Mekere has instructed all projects that fall under the definition of public funds to be managed and implemented in full compliance of project funding and implementation guidelines as administered by the DIRD.
