LEADERSHIP is for women at all levels of society and one challenge that we face today is we are not reaching out to the possible women leaders in rural areas who have been instilled with rich cultural values of respect and ethic.

As an upcoming young woman in leadership, Miss Pacific Islands Leoshina Mercy Kariha challenged other women leaders of PNG when speaking at the International Women’s Day celebrations hosted by UN Women last Friday at Grand Papua Hotel.

In recognising this year’s theme of “think equal, build smart, innovate for change”, Miss Kariha said that women in rural areas needed training in personal development to be able to express themselves with confidence and find solutions to problems they faced every day.

“As I serve the community, these are some of the innovative ways we can transform lives and the society at large contributing to national development,” she said.

“It is vital that aside from support in small and medium enterprises, for economic empowerment of women, our women also must be taught social justice.”

She echoed on one of PNG’s pioneer women parliamentarians statement: “The Constitution, our mama law is readily available for you to read, read it and get to know your rights as women of PNG” during the PNG Australian Alumni Association panel discussion last week.

Miss Kariha said women must take the initiative to be educated and have sound knowledge of their rights and freedoms.

“In doing so, we will not define ourselves as the weaker sex because the truth is it is just a label that we have decided to believe for generations,” she said.

“Let us change that label and rekindle the light for our women to be the change that our society needs.”

Being part of the women’s day celebrations, Miss Kariha said, to celebrate women’s acts of courage and determination in advancing the rights of women in nation-building.

“We should thank all the women leaders who have gone before us, pioneer leaders in our society, our mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers,” she said.
