Firearm suspect arrested in Daru
BY MIRIAM ZARRIGA
A HIGHPOWERED firearm has been recovered and a suspect arrested over a fight that led to the burning down of two homes in Daru, Western Province.
South Fly police commander Brian Kombe said that the recovery of the weapon was through the hard work and determination of his men who ensured the incident was investigated to stop any further damage to the lives of the residents of Daru during the festive season.
Mr Kombe further stated that the suspect is now in the cell awaiting a court appearance.
Two homes were burnt after a man was stabbed for harassing female party goers on Sunday morning; the suspect was a relative of the female party goers who stepped in to stop the harassment of his relatives Mr Kombe said.
“In turn the relatives of the victim burnt down two homes at what is known as the Kaima corner and went through several homes and escaped when police arrived,” he said.
The arrest and recovering of the firearm will ensure no more trouble is caused and I commend my men for their swift action, Mr Kombe said.
In other news from the district, two Vietnamese men have been charged with bringing in illegal fireworks into the province.
“The two men were working as sea food agents when they were arrested. They were charged with one count each of being in possession of prohibited imported goods and are out on bail awaiting their court hearing.”
Illegal fireworks is a big no for the district, but with border issues, more of these prohibited items are brought in from across the border, and we need to stop this, Mr Kombe said.
