Hamamas rice gaining steady traction in market
BY MATTHEW VARI
Since introducing its very first 100 per cent locally grown and produced rice, Trukai Industries says the product is gaining steady traction as it continues branding awareness around the local product.
Trukai General manager sales and marketing, Andrew Daubney, gave the update since the product was launched in August this year.
“It is growing slowly and obviously we are trying to get the brand awareness around it. It builds over time,’’ he said.
“We are excited and we are about to plant our next crop for the coming year, which is probably going to be off the top of my head five times the previous size.
“PNG grown rice is fantastic and I don’t know if you have had a chance to taste it, but it tastes unbelievable.”
He said while sales of the rice is only in Lae and Port Moresby at the moment, he explained that this was because if the volume which is small compared to the overall demand out in the marketplace.
“Because of the volume, we couldn’t produce enough in the first crop so this next coming one we are going to try and expand from that,” Mr Daubney said.
He said the first harvest from Umi in the Morobe province, where the rice is grown locally, produced a 200 tonne harvest.
“It was a lot but people love our current Roots products and Trukai product,’’ he said.
“I suppose changing to a different product people have got to try it first and I think once they try it is great long grain product and taste better than anything on the market.”
