PAPUANEWS.ID – West Papuan armed civilian group has just brutally attacked innocent civilians. The group fatally murdered dozens of construction workers with Papuan and non Papuan backgrounds. While many have been helping the development in West Papua voluntarily, this group has just put another strong sign that they are the the real threats that keep dragging down West Papua are blatantly against any development there.

Recent reports confirm that the armed separatist group (GSPB) allegedly attacked bridge construction workers in Kali Yigi-Kali Aurak, Nduga District, Papua. This attack took place on Sunday, December 2nd, at the location of the construction of a bridge between Yigi and Aurak River, Kab Nduga, which is a continuation of the Trans Papua road development by the current administration of the Indonesian Government.

It has just been confirmed that at least 24 people were killed, 2 people fled and 8 others were rescued and taken to Koroptak District. The victims were employees of PT Istaka Karya, a state-owned company located in Jakarta and Wamena, Jayawijaya Regency, in West Papua.

According to sources, on Saturday, December 1st, the armed group celebrated the OPM Anniversary Ceremony in Yigi District. Prior to the brutal killings, some of the victims witnessed the OPM Anniversary Ceremony and subsequently took photos. Aggravated for no reason, the GSPB fatally attacked and allegedly murder the workers. Until now, armed group is still at the scene and guarding the murdered.

Indonesian police and armed forces are still looking for more information regarding this incident. The area in which the bridge was being constructed does not have access to communication or cellular networks, which makes coordination incredibly difficult. The amount of victims, though, is confirmed through a radio communication the day after the killings.

The incident was gravely disappointing for many sides, considering the victims were innocent civilians, not combatants who were at war.

More importantly, though, the killings are another serious sign that the group is against any development effort in West Papua. They are the ones that keeps pushing back any potential progress amd endeavors West Papua and West Papuans make.

Many have sacrifice their time, wealth and even lives to help West Papua developing and catching up with recent globalization. They are both West Papuans and non West Papuans who volunteer to build schools and health centers. Some of our friends even stay there for years to voluntarily teach West Papuan kids and provide free health care for the ill.

And people like the murdered workers are those who travelled miles away from their beloved families and friends, not just for earning money but for helping both physical and non physical developments in West Papua. These people work in many sectors like construction and agriculture and understand that what they do can help the regions keep progressing.

But then there comes the armed group whose job is nothing but scare away and as recently happened, kill people who are in West Papua to help with the region’s development. Even though condemned by some people, this group is unfortunately gaining support and cheer-ups from diverse organizations. Lately a PNG governor, Powes Parkop, blatantly support the group and turned away from the fact that this group has just killed innocent people.

Unfortunately this governor is not alone. There are many, sadly, alike that turned a deaf ear and closed eyes over such unfortunate events. They instead keep spreading claims that Indonesians are continuous mistreats West Papuans by molesting and killing them.

We Tell the Truth NZ are hopeful that the international community will finally see who are sacrificing things for developing West Papua and those who keep failing the region. Hopefully the authorities can immediately arrest those bloody murderers, so that development continues well within the region and the local communities feel safe again. If these murderers keep showing up in West Papua, who will be willing to come develop the region?
