AN officer attached with the Laloki police post in Central province has been charged and will be sentenced on January 28 over the discharging of a police firearm at 14-Mile early last month.

The officer, identified as constable Walter Paijo, was attached with the police post when he got into an argument with a complainant.

The officer, who was drinking with his mates, later took two unmarked vehicles filled with men, went up to the complainant’s home at 14-Mile, outside Port Moresby, and got into a verbal exchange with the complainant.

He took out a police firearm and fired two shots, scaring the community. The officer was contained by his friends and left the scene.

The family took the two empty shells and brought them to the policing the police taskforce team officer-in-charge Apollo Terry at the Gordon police station.

Mr Terry and his men took up the investigations and went up to the police post, where they disarmed the constable and brought him into the city. “He was interviewed, formally arrested and charged with unlawfully discharging a firearm in a public place and faces court on Monday,” Mr Terry said. “The court found him guilty and adjourned the case to January 28 for sentencing.”
