STUDENTS attending Fr Peter (Fatima) Secondary School in Jiwaka Province were told to return home after frustrated parents blocked off the school administration building on Monday.

Frustrated parents and stakeholders used a log to barricade the building on Monday morning and told the students to return home when they came to register for the 2019 school year.

The parents, from the three districts of North Waghi, Jimi and South Waghi, were joined by locals from the surrounding tribes of Komblo, Sekaka, Andpang Takipkanem and Kulaka to demanded the school administration and board, the Catholic agency, and the provincial education division to explain why the academic standard of the school has dropped dramatically.

They demanded the school administration to show a list of how many students that did grade 12 last year (2018) and were selected to tertiary institutions this year.

They also wanted a new administration team to take over and an explanation why the school is charging increased project fees.

Community spokesman Michael Tua, in conveying the grievances said parents were disappointed after learning that not many students from Fatima were selected to tertiary institutions.

This basically raises doubts about the performances of the teachers and administration.

“Fatima was been one of the top 10 schools in the country once upon a time.

“I beleive this was when the Christian Brothers and nuns taught there,’’ he said.

“In 1985, late Dr Peter Bamne topped the country when he scored 250 out of 250 in five subjects taught in grade 10.

“While three of his colleagues late Paul Enn Murunga, late Mark Opur and Benjamin Miam scored 249 out of 250.

“Fatima has lost its former glory. “The parents and stakeholders would like to see the school take back its pride starting this year.”

The stakeholders have called on the authorities from the church education agency, the PEB and school’s administration to meet with them on Wednesday.

This is to iron out the issues.

Bishop Douglas Young, the Archbishop of Mt Hagen said: “At the moment I am letting the school governing council and the Jiwaka subcommittee of the Diocesan Catholic education board to address the issues.

“It means that we will listen to the grievances.

“Then we will give an opportunity to the school administration to respond.”

No one from the administration, teaching staff or school board was available for comment as the situation remained unresolved.

The principal John Apita was not in the school when the incident occurred.
