Mother charged with wilful murder
A WOMAN who allegedly killed her child has been charged with wilful murder.
This is after her mother disapproved of her marriage to the baby’s father in Daru, Western Province.
The woman, 23, from Dimiri village in Morehead LLG, South Fly district, was charged by police yesterday morning, two days after she admitted her crime.
Bail had been refused and the woman is expected to face court this week where bail could be sought.
The woman’s mother had been asked by the family and sexual violence unit to report to their Daru office however, she had refused to comply.
Provincial police commander Brian Kombe confirmed the charges yesterday, adding that police wanted to question the grandmother of the baby in relation to his death last Friday.
The killing, which has shocked Daru Island and Western Province, happened when the woman took her two-month-old boy into the nearby bushes near the Daru Airport tarmac.
This is where she is alleged to have stabbed him through the head, killing him instantly.
The blood-stained knife was then used to dig a shallow grave.
The the child wrapped in a red cloth was buried.
She returned to her family and pretended nothing had happened.
Later on Friday evening she told her family what she had done. Police started a search to recover the child’s body but due to poor light were unable to locate the grave. On Saturday morning, between 9 and 10 o’clock, the child’s body was fially found and the knife retrieved nearby.
