EAST New Britain police have confiscated a large quantity of cannabis at the Tokua airport on Monday afternoon.

This was reported by the provincial police commander Joseph Tabali on Tuesday.

He said the cannabis would have had a street value of K60,000.

Mr Tabali said the marijuana was found on the PNG Air flight that flew in to Tokua, transiting for Kavieng on the 4.15pm flight.

He said the flight was originally from Port Moresby to Lae, then flew into Hoskins and was headed for Kavieng via Tokua when the package was discovered by the ground staff in Tokua.

Mr Tabali said the package looked suspicious after ground staff realised that it did not have an electronic tag or addressed to any recipient.

He said the airline staff then alerted the police drug squad in Kokopo who retrieved the cannabis.

Mr Tabali was appreciative of the airline staff, airport staff and security who worked together to intercept the cannabis.

No arrests were made.
