Judges get official welcome to high court
Secretary for Justice and Attorney-General Eric Kwa has welcomed Deputy Chief Justice Ambeng Kandakasi and Justice Nicholas Miviri to the National and Supreme Court bench.
During a ceremonial sitting at Waigani last Friday, Mr Kwa said it was an achievement for the O’Neill Government to increase the number of judges through the judicial and legal services commission.
He said the government was committed to ensure the justice system was working to create a conducive environment for investment in PNG for economic growth. “The medium-term development plan of the government aims to improve enforcement of the rule of law,” he said.
“The strategy to achieve this is to ‘strengthen, increase capacity and modernise the law and justice services at all levels.”
He said law and order had always and still was a challenge.
“The rule of law has to be strong for our young country to continue growing; thus the government is making investments’ in the judiciary as well,” Mr Kwa said.
He congratulated the two judges, who would be serving the judiciary to ensure that the rule of law was strong with their experiences to the judiciary.
Justice Kandakasi was a serving judge for 18 years before his appointment as deputy chief justice on December 18.
Justice Miviri was admitted to the bar in 1986 and has since served the State in different capacities as a lawyer, junior prosecutor, then as a state prosecutor in 1989. He was the deputy public prosecutor from 2009 to 2011 and was serving as the director of police legal services when he was appointed as acting judge.
