Mixed energy to boost electrification
BY JEROME IKUAVI
With the current 13 per cent electricity coverage in PNG, it has shown that PNG’s energy mix has 40 percent reliance on liquid fuels while the discovery of coal energy could increase nationwide electrification to meet the national plan for 70 per cent electrification throughout PNG by 2030.
Mayur Resources managing director Paul Mulder said the heavy oil and diesel usage are linked to volatility of global energy prices which drain the Forex reserves and PNG is using the most expensive energy source for power generation.
According to the company’s research, the electricity generation in PNG relies on the imported 40 percent liquid fuels while 7 percent geothermal, 16 percent gas, and 37 percent hydro.
Mulder said electricity generation from coal and gas provides the backbone of economic growth in which a de-coupled multi energy power developer is right for PNG that will deliver cheap, stable energy which sustains and develops economic growth.
“De-coupled multi energy power developer integrates the solar, wind, coal, gas and biomass to achieve clean and cheap power sources,” said Mulder.
He said with the current plans for Gulf coal processing while awaiting the energy policy bill to be table, PNG has a greater chance to improve electrification with cheaper price which has been drafted in the bill.
Mulder added that the energy policy incorporates sustainability in which reduces emissions with new technology, honours climate commitments and improve access to energy.
“The policy is also competitive in which industries will play a key role.
“This is for reducing power costs and creating investments and productivity,” he says.
Mulder said the energy policy is security of supply with diversified energy mix and shelter for global prices while using domestic resources.
